A creative night out and two paintings to be proud of at Whimsy Wees Art Studio.
Yes, adults can learn art at any age. You can start with no experience, return after decades away, or explore materials you have never tried. You do not need artistic skills to take an art class.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not good at art,” you’re exactly who I hope to welcome at Whimsy Wees Art Studio in Bethany Village. Through adult art & craft classes, workshops, and sip and paint nights, I help beginners feel comfortable and find joy in creating.
Many approaches I share in “What Makes a Great Art Teacher for Kids” matter just as much for adults: clear instructions, patience, encouragement, and room for individual expression.
In my experience, age is often less of a concern than the belief that you are not artistic. You can begin before you know whether you will be good at it.
Why Adults Believe They Cannot Make Art
Many adults stopped making art when it became an elective in school. Others remember a discouraging comment or comparing their work to someone else’s.
Years later, they still judge their ability by what they could do when they stopped. But if you have not practiced since childhood, why would you expect to feel confident now?
With instruction and practice, you can develop skills. You can learn to hold a brush, layer paint, or sculpt clay. You do not have to sell your work or pursue an art career. Creating can simply be a hobby you enjoy.
How I Help Adults Feel Comfortable
When someone sees our sample painting at a sip and paint night, they often say, “That’s gorgeous, but I don’t think I can paint that.”
My response is usually, “Stick with me.”
We Work One Step at a Time
A finished painting can look overwhelming because you see every step at once. I break it into manageable pieces.
We might begin with the background. I demonstrate which brush to use, how to hold it, and how to apply the paint. Then we dry that layer before continuing.
I walk around to offer individual support. Each step builds confidence, and people often leave with something they are proud to display.
We Welcome Different Ways of Creating
Some adults want to follow a sample closely. Others want a demonstration before exploring their own ideas.
In an India ink class, one person might recreate our example while another makes a different drawing using the same techniques. Both approaches belong in our studio.
How to Choose Your First Adult Art Class
Choose a project or material that interests you.
Look for beginner friendly instruction and clear demonstrations.
Ask whether you will follow a sample or explore your own ideas.
Give yourself permission to try once and see how you feel.
I think of it like trying pickleball. I have never played and would probably feel intimidated, but I would need to try it to discover whether I enjoyed it.
You Do Not Have to Call Yourself an Artist to Take an Art Class
At Whimsy Wees Art Studio in Bethany Village, serving Beaverton and Portland, you are welcome with whatever experience you have.
