What Makes a Great Art Teacher for Kids?

Insights from Whimsy Wees Art Studio Owner

When parents search for a kids art teacher or children’s art classes near me , they often assume that being a great teacher means being a skilled artist. While artistic talent helps, the truth is, teaching art to kids is about so much more than creating perfect paintings.

I’ve spent over 20 years teaching elementary school students and now running  Whimsy Wees Art Studio, and I’ve learned that the best art teachers combine their love for art with a love for kids, community, and creativity.

The Spark of Creativity Matters Most

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching a child discover their own creative spark. Many kids arrive feeling unsure of themselves or intimidated by the artwork displayed in the studio. Some carry the pressure of school, sports, and competitions, where there’s always a “right” and “wrong” way.

In our studio, I set up projects that are open-ended. We introduce a famous, local or current artist, demonstrate a technique, explore materials, and then invite the kids to create. There’s no single right way to complete the project. That freedom often brings a look of excitement to their faces. They realize they get to explore, experiment, and express themselves. Over time, this builds confidence and joy, not just in art, but in themselves.

Skills That Make a Teacher Stand Out

My experience with attending The Art Center of Design and obtaining my BFA and 20-year elementary school teacher shapes every class. Here’s what I bring to the studio:

  • Classroom management and pacing: Lessons are structured with short demonstrations and creative work periods, allowing kids to learn skills and then immediately apply them.

  • Art circles: At the end of class, students share their artwork with peers and discuss what they notice. This teaches constructive feedback, confidence in speaking, and appreciation for others’ creativity.

  • Encouragement without pressure: I guide students to elevate their work while ensuring they never feel judged or “wrong.” The goal is growth, creativity, and self-expression.

  • Inspiration from art history: We often explore famous artists and styles, giving kids a broader perspective and deeper inspiration for their own creations.

Common Misconceptions About Great Art Teachers

Many parents think a great art teacher must be a master artist. While talent is important, teaching is the real key. Knowing how to deliver information, manage a classroom, guide students individually, and foster a creative, joyful environment is what makes an art teacher exceptional.

You can be an amazing artist but not know how to teach, especially to children. The ability to balance skill-building with freedom, encouragement, and fun is what sets great art teachers apart.

Seeing the Difference in Kids

Time and again, I see children transform in our classes. Shy students or those who feel pressure to “do it right” gradually gain confidence, kids that feel they have to be “Perfect” gain the courage to explore without pressure. Their excitement, engagement, and pride in their creations are the clearest signs of a great art learning experience.

What Makes a Truly Great Art Teacher for Kids?

In one sentence: a truly great art teacher is a joyful teacher who is enthusiastic, loves the arts, loves sharing art, enjoys being part of a creative community, and most importantly, loves kids and building them up.
